Wayzata, MN – Stormwater Pond Design Enhancement & Wetland Restoration

CHALLENGE

A private homeowner remodeled their home that contained a wetland and stormwater pond. The homeowner expressed a desire to enhance the wetland quality and stormwater pond by vegetatively restoring the wetland to consist of more native species and adding a fountain to the pond to increase aeration and improve water quality and aesthetics.

SOLUTION

The construction and modification of both water and wetland resources requires coordination, permitting, and compliance with multiple state and local authorities and rules. Moore worked with the City of Wayzata, Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, and the wetland Technical Evaluation Panel members to ensure the proposed project obtained the proper permits for the design and restoration of the wetland. Survey and sediment collection were conducted to gather boundaries and depth of the pond to aid in the design and ensure sediments were not contaminated prior to rehabilitation.

OUTCOME

With the permits in place and design completed, the rehabilitation and restoration of the stormwater pond and associated wetland are underway. A new aeration system in the pond was installed to provide both water quality and aesthetic improvement. The wetlands on the property are undergoing a complete restoration by removing existing nonnative invasive vegetation and planting and seeding in native species. The native species will provide enhanced wildlife habitat, soil stabilization, water quality benefit, and increase the aesthetics of the wetland and surrounding area.
